How is this different from other backup services?
Our software is completely client controlled. We do not and can not
access your data. All backup schedules, file choices, options, etc. are
in YOUR control. The data is compressed and encrypted BEFORE it leaves
your computer, and you are the only one with a key to decrypt the data.
Can anybody read any of my data?
No. Only you can after providing your encryption key.
How is my data stored?
Your data is stored on our servers in an encrypted format, using 448-bit
encryption.
How do I get my data back if I need it?
Our client software has built-in restore functionality so you can simply
choose the file(s) and/or folder(s) that you need, and you can instantly
restore them to your computer. Our new web-based restore feature allows
you to restore your data without installing backup client software.
I already have a tape backup system. Why should I use your service?
Many of our clients use us as a secondary backup and continue to run
their tape backups; however, do keep in mind many of the problems of
tape drives . . . in a March 2004 study of IT executives, 42% of
respondents had been unable to recover data from tape in the last year
as a result of tape unreliability. In addition, with tape backup human
involvement is required to keep a copy of the data offsite, data is
stored on tape in a non-encrypted format, and in a recovery scenario you
would need to have access to the same type of tape drive that originally
created the tape backup.
What if we have a firewall?
Our service uses a dedicated port that simply needs to be opened on
your firewall.
How much does it cost?
Click here, or call us at 1-800-807-0964.
What happens to my data once it’s been transmitted?
Once your data has been transmitted to our servers, the data is stored
there (in its encrypted format) until you need it.
I have mirrored hard drives. Won’t that protect me?
Not completely. Most data loss is due to data corruption or user error.
RAID systems such as hard disk mirroring only protect you from a
hardware failure.
How often will my computer be backed up?
As often as you specify in your backup schedule.
How often should I use the remote backup service?
That depends on your specific needs. Some of our clients back up once a
week while others back up critical files multiple times per day.
How long does the backup take?
After the initial “seed backup”, the backups operate very quickly
because only the individual portions of files that have changed are
backed up.
What do I have to do to run a backup?
Once you have configured your client software with your backup
selections and you’ve defined your backup schedule, you don’t have to do
anything. The system will automatically begin its backup at the
scheduled time. The software can be configured so that its operation is
invisible to you unless there is a problem with the backup, in which
case you are notified.
How are open files handled?
This is rarely an issue since backups are normally performed after
business hours when all applications have been closed. However, we do
offer an Open File Agent at additional charge.
Do I need to backup my whole computer?
No. If your system crashes, you will re-install your operating system
and your applications and use our restore functionality to recover all
of your data that was backed up to our servers.
Can I backup multiple computers?
Yes. Multiple computers can be combined and billed on one account. You
will be billed for the total amount of data stored by all computers
listed under your account.
How much data can I backup?
As much as you need to. You are billed according to the actual amount of
compressed data stored on our backup servers.
What operating systems are supported?
All Windows operating systems are supported. However, because we support
mapped drives and network locations, you can back up data that is stored
on other operating systems.
What do I do if I lose my encryption password?
Panic! By design, this is a secure system. You are the only one to ever
know your encryption password (unless you choose to share it). We can
NOT recover the encryption password, and therefore, without that
password, we can NOT access your data.
I’m really concerned about security. Tell me again, how is my data
secured?
Every portion of our backup system was designed with security in mind.
All authentication and data transmission is encrypted with DES,
Triple-DES, or Blowfish encryption. All data is stored in its encrypted
format. Not even our technical staff has access to your data. YOU are
the only one that can retrieve your data, by providing your encryption
password. Also, your encryption password is never transmitted or stored
in plain text.
